Room with vermillion color walls
This type of Japanese style room has vermillion color walls. The color is called “Bengala” because it was imported from Bengal region of India in the 16th century. We can see this type of rooms in Machiya, town houses in Kyoto as well. In Kanazawa, there are many houses which have bright vermillion color walls since ancient days. In addition, since vermillion color walls have effect to make geisha girls’ behaviors and performance attractive, vermillion color walls have been used for rooms in historic chaya houses and inns.
Room with ultramarine color walls
These rooms are used for bed rooms. You can see rooms with ultramarine color walls in samurai residential houses of Ishikawa Prefecture. The origin of this type of rooms is Seisonkaku villa located in Kenrokuen Garden, which was constructed by Nariyasu Maeda, the 13th lord of Kaga clan. A few hundred years ago, ultramarine color is made from lapis lazuli, which was used only by limited artists even in Europe because it was expensive. In the early 1800s, synthetic lapis lazuli was developed and spread widely. Nariyasu Maeda bought synthetic lapis lazuli that was more expensive than gold directly to use it for Seisonkaku villa. It seemed that the room with ultramarine color walls was used as a guest room for special guests of Maeda family.
You can see this type of rooms in historical buildings, such as Mugen-an (Yamanaka-onsen), a cultural property designated by Ishikawa Prefecture, Kaikaro (Higashi chaya area), a historical building to be preserved designated by Kanazawa City, Tsujiya Garden, cultural property designated by Kanazawa City.
